When the Doctor Becomes the Patient: Living With Stage IV Lung Cancer with Sanda Cohen

It started with a cough. It was a cough that lingered, then gradually became worse. Eventually, the cough became so bad that it required a trip to the emergency room. The next 36 hours changed a woman’s life forever.

When we get sick, we go to the doctors. We get ourselves checked out, maybe we’re giving a prescription, then we go about our merry way. To some extent, maybe we take our physicians for granted. We really don’t think about them until we need them. But doctors are human, too. And, like us, they too can fall prey to illness.

This is the story of Sanda Cohen. Sanda was a pediatrician who never smoked and never lived with a smoker. Despite that, at the age of 62 she suddenly found herself on the other side of the doctor’s desk facing a diagnosis of stage IV lung cancer. Now, Sanda is not only fighting and surviving, she’s thriving well beyond the 6 months life expectancy given to her at the outset.

Meet the inspiring Sanda Cohen.
