Summer Skin Care Tips (And A Skin Care Giveaway)

The temperatures are heating up, flying and crawling insects are out en masse and the sun is showing off with it’s brightest, most glorious rays. Looks like we’ve landed full force into summer.

While I enjoy a fun-filled day soaking up the rays of the sun as much as the next person, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

Wait…The Sun is Our Friend, Right?

Oh, we love ourselves some sunshine. We bask in it, we bathe in its sultry beams, we can’t seem to get enough of it. However, for as wonderful as that huge Vitamin D-spewing star that shoots out its warming summer skin carerays can be, sadly, the sun can be equally damaging to our skin and be the source of all sorts of mayhem. Sunburn, sallowness, discoloration, skin cancer. And don’t be fooled, oh fair skinned friends; we are all susceptible to these maladies (yes folks, even African Americans and those with more melanin are not immune to sunburn). That’s why we as women—especially midlife women—need to be mindful of our skin and treat it with the loving care that it so rightly deserves.

Over the years, our epidermis has gone through some serious changes, right? A few more wrinkles here, loss of elasticity there…it’s enough to make you want to jump into a giant vat of moisturizer and soaking in it nonstop for a day or two…or twelve.

So what can you do to care for your summer skin? Albertini International, a company devoted to skin care for women over 40, has a few tips — 5 to be exact — on how we can pamper and take care of our skin this summer.

Getting sun is always a dilemma for me.. I love a light tan but my father died of a melanoma at age 43, sun-related, and I have his fair skin and moles. So, I do get a little morning dose of sun for my Vitamin D and because my skin loves feeling the sun. But at my doctor’s urging, and common sense, I no longer seek a tan!
What I wish I’d know in my teen years was what all that sun would do to my 60-year old skin. Age spots, a few skin cancers, funky ‘chicken-like’ goose bumpy things on my neck!! I’m all about the sunscreen!

Walker, I remember years ago, after I had been on vacation by myself to Curacao, I was telling a friend that my shoulder got sunburned. Oh, she laughed and laughed. She swore up and down I couldn’t possibly get sunburned because I’m black. I looked at her like she had suddenly morphed into a three-eyed gorilla or something. Au contraire, I told her, we do get sunburns. I rolled up my sleeve and showed her the proof. Sunscreen is a must. 🙂
